Scotland on the Blogging A – Z Challenge

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 23086 – 1111

Here’s the haps:

As you may or may not remember my wife and I are Scottish landowners. But that’ll be just the icing on the cake of our trip. Well, as far as we know and as far as any human can plan anything. What we hope to do is see some of the places our ancestors came from and possibly find out a bit more than we already know.

We will start at the capital Edinburgh which looks like a couple of days worth of exploring by itself:

Then on to Blairadam Forest to have a picnic on the grounds there. From there we will go see Glasgow, where my great-great-great grandfather was born. One thing that was interesting to me is that his father was born in Antrim, Ireland, and died in Belfast. Fourth great-granddad must have spent some time in Scotland, though.

Down the road from Glasgow is Kilmarnock where my great-great-great grandmother was born. From there to Stevenston where my wife’s third great-grandmother was born.

From there I added Loch Lomond because I recall hearing a sad song about it. I could look it up but it’s late and I’m tired and I have been trying to post these regularly. Besides, the other reason it’s on there at all is because I would like to see Loch Ness. I mean, I am going to Roswell, after all.

Likelihood of this happening in my lifetime (Lord willing, of course): 85%
Likelihood of running into someone I know or met on the Internet: 50%

Hmm, after reading several posts about these splendid places, I start to think that the likelihood of you running into someone you know is probably 100%, but you may not recognize each other as an internet acquaintance.

That’s probably true although there are some I might contact before I go. Like my friend in England whom I have never met.

I’ll take the high road, and you’ll take the low road.

Oh, you should expect that I will.

You may well be introduced to Irn Bru. A wonderful Scottish soft drink that I would be very happy to share.

Sounds like a plan! The U.K. is kind of on our must-do list.

Have you seen the movie, Belfast? It’s pretty good.

      No, I haven’t.

I appreciate the way you always take the high road in your posts. But you did not mention whether kilts will be involved in the visit. I wonder – are the kilts in Scotland explained by the common availability of really good whiskey?

Well, I have to take the low road on this one as I don’t think I’m Scottish enough or man enough to wear a kilt. As to whiskey…well, here’s one scenario:

We aren’t landowners, but we both have Scottish heritage (McNicol for him, MacQuarrie & Murray for me). Scotland has always been on our bucket list but we never thought we’d make it. But we are! This fall we have a two month trip: cruise from FL to Barcelona, then on to Rome for a Mediterranean cruise before flying into Edinburgh for ten days (including a 5 day guided tour of the Highlands), finally back to Barcelona for another cruise back to FL. Oh, and hubby does have a kilt and often wears it on formal night when cruising.

Wow! Sounds like an exciting trip. Of course pictures and blog posts will ensue…

You know it – some quick updates (usually on Facebook) while traveling with longer blogs when we get home and can upload our photos.
