Eiffel Tower on the Blogging A – Z Challenge

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 23070 – 1095

Here’s the haps:

From a very old game which I miss a lot, Civilization II, one of the wonders of the world you can build on your way to ruling the world is:

Mrs. Herb and my younger sister (the classy one) want, at some point, to visit Paris. I have a couple of grandchildren who are one-fourth French and might also like to. I could have saved this for the letter “P” entry but the Eiffel Tower is something I’m interested in seeing as well and I didn’t have a good solid “E” ready to go. Not sure about the actual logistics of any of it yet because, as you will see in the coming days, we do have some European destinations in mind.

An engineering marvel completed in 1889 as an entryway arch for the World’s Fair it was protested by 300 writers, poets, and artists (famous ones at the time) along with local residents who feared in case it might fall over. It was twice as tall as the tallest structure of the time, the Washington Monument and it remained the tallest man-made structure in the world until 1931 when the Empire Stae Building was completed.

The guy in this video has a good, steady voice and gives a fairly concise history of it in almost 9 minutes:

The official website for the tower is The Eiffel Tower. We will also see the Arc De Triomphe and the Louvre while we are there, I’m sure.

Considered an eyesore by some at the time, it eventually went on to become a symbol of not just the city but the whole country.

Likelihood of this happening within the next year: 0+%
Likelihood of this happening in my lifetime (Lord willing, as I said in the first couple of posts): 85%
Likelihood of running into someone I know or met on the Internet: ?%

Yeah, so I heard. Well, I have time to plan, for now.

A beautiful tower, that is for sure. Definitely pick a time when the protests are over!

Yeah, it’s not going to happen this year at all or probably next. But it’s on the list.

Finally I have been somewhere you feature. Chances of meeting someone category is interesting. I was startled once on a business trip to London. My colleague and I got a brief chance to visit Westminster Abby and she ran into a close friend from her neighborhood. Sometimes the World is smaller than we think!

It can get pretty amazing and kind of weird, seeing someone or meeting someone from your hometown.

Very cool. I think my E would probably be Ethiopia.

I could see that. It does look very interesting and has a lot of history.

        Definitely.

Oh, France sounds romantic. Google just said that France is as popular as Italy for American visitors. I have always thought that Italy is way more popular than any other European countries. I don’t know why I have this impression.

I would like that, too. If we get to make a trip to Europe it would likely be places in our ancestry. The UK for sure as well some others.

There was always Evansville, Indiana. But sure, pick the popular one. 🙂

Hahahaha! Well, Evansville might have made the cut if I had thunk it in advance.
