Here’s the haps:
Almost two billion seconds ago, over thirty-three million minutes ago, half a million hours, or twenty-two thousand three hundred eleven days ago I was brought forth on this continent.
It seems strange, getting to this point in life and turning around to check my back trail. A gob? A ton? A zillion-kajillion? Too many memories to count. Good. Bad. Beautiful. Ugly. Every time I turn around and look back, there they are, plus a few more, following me, hot on my trail. I know what will happen if I stop for too long and look at them. They will overtake me and overwhelm me and run me through a wringer of the broadest range of emotions there is. I can only stand to do that on a limited basis lest I see the awful, glaring, stupid mistakes I’ve made and become depressed or the victories I’ve won and good things I’ve done and become puffed up with pride. They keep each other under control and I turn around and go forward.
Probably one of the wisest yet simplest thoughts I ever heard about the matter of time was when our Bishop said, “All days and all moments are not equal.” Anecdotally (According to Quote Investigator), Albert Einstein was so inundated by the press at one point he had to hire a secretary to keep from being bothered unnecessarily. He is reported to have instructed her to explain the Theory of Relativity this way:
When you sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it’s only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it’s two hours. That’s relativity.
