A Bit About Me

This list was first done on June 25, 2005, which is the date of the original post. I tried to leave it as much alone as possible but also use it to make a sort of “About Me” page. I will mark with an * anything I change.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Oh, before I forget, I need to ask someone, is it true that after you have made 100 blog entries you are supposed to do one that is “100 Things You Didn’t Know About Me?” I mean, I have passed that point a while ago. This entry appears to be number 118. Then when do you have to do it again, at 200? Why not 265? “265 MORE things you didn’t know about me???” Believe me, fans, friends, fiends, foes, blogophiles and just plain folks; you do NOT want to know 365 things about me. Well, I guess I could start a little thing on the side that would have a different factoid about me every day.

For instance, let’s see, Okay, let me try this. Since I’m doing it in Word I can just highlight and delete it if it sounds stupid. Or just leave it up and give everyone something to laugh at.

100 things you (maybe) didn’t know about Herb:

Addendum as of 05/06/2020:

It’s kind of interesting to me that one of the most popular entries here is actually my “About Me” page. It was one of those 100 things about me posts that you’re supposed to do after you’ve made your first 100 posts. I got to thinking about it, especially after a couple of people said it was the funniest “about me” they had read in a long time or ever. I’m not sure exactly how I feel about that, but the list was done kind of tongue-in-cheek and it was intended to be both informative and humorous. Then I began to wonder, has anything changed? If I had to do it over again, what would change? I mean, this is post number 573 and when I hit post 600 do I have to add 500 more things? Or when I had hit post 500, was I supposed to stop and add 400 more things? Believe me. Please take my word. You do not want to know 600 things about me. Besides, if I add more archival stuff into the blog on the dates it was supposed to be in there, the numbers would be off. In fact, that original entry was number 118.

Now, all of that out of the way, how accurate is that list? I mean, it was originally done in 2005 and re-posted when I switched my blogging software back to WordPress. So, I found a couple of things that were kind of outdated, but nothing real extraordinary.

On question 4 I would have to add Civilization 6, even though I don’t play very much at all anymore.

On questions 10 & 11 I would have to say that while I don’t subscribe to any newspapers any longer I do subscribe to 2 comics pages, Comics Kingdom and Gocomics.

Question 19 doesn’t require an asterisk. I have always loved German Potato Salad (the way my Grandma and Aunts made it).

Question 58 is kind of problematic because computers come and go.

For question 83, Charlie Daniels’ blog is at https://www.charliedaniels.com/soap-box now.

And that’s about all the changes in over 15 years. Does that mean I’m consistent or boring? Or both?

You can read a little bit more about me on my main website’s Resume Page. I feel the Curriculum Vitae page is the kind of additional information that some people might want to read. Curriculum Vitae

I added a comments section. I didn’t know there was not one on this page.
Also, in my addendum I missed:
number 43, I have read all SIX books in the H2G2 trilogy and yes, I think the sixth is canon.
number 92, I would still shoot a pink gun.
number 94 is like number 58 in that cars come and go, too.

I have read all SIX books in the H2G2 trilogy

I don’t think I’ve read all six. Thank you for the addition to my bucket list!

      1. capost2k Avatar

Well, actually, the sixth book, And Another Thing, was not written by Douglas Adams.

        1. peNdantry Avatar

Thanks for the heads-up on that 🙂

          1. Herb Avatar

No, but it is still considered canon because it was commisioned by Douglas’ wife and daughter.

            1. peNdantry Avatar

If DNA himself didn’t write it, I don’t care who calls it canon 😛

        2. Herb Avatar

No, but it is counted as canon because it was commisioned by Douglas’ wife and daughter.

Btw, Herb. Now following your blog, but when I try to go there via a comment at someone else’s blog, I get a warning from Firefox and it will NOT let me pass. Feel like a Balrog in LOTR. 🥴
But if I access you from my reader or email, no problems. 🙂

Thanks, John. You and Pete helped me figure it out. i think my interface differs from yours because I am self-hosted. It did show up on the Jetpack App on my phone so I will work with that. I appreciate your help.

We share a number of the same likes and dislikes. Should you like good, not trashy Science Fiction, here is a link to obtain a free PDF of The Day of The Triffids. I’d also read some of Wyndham’s other books, however, they were not nearly as good. It was published in ’51 the year before I was born:

Somehow this wound up in my spam folder. Sorry. Thanks for the link, though, I will definitely give it a look.

I have been blogging for years and I have never done any type of numbered list of “things about me”. So, I would say, No, no it is not true. 🙂

Hey, Herb. I wanted to let you know that for some reason, WP won’t let me comment on some of your blogs. Don’t know if it’s a glitch, but thought I’d give you a heads up! I hope this comment finds you well and in good spirits! Have a great second half of the week! 🙂

    1. Herb Avatar

Thank you so very much. I think it may be a problem with the WPReader but I don’t know. I appreciate the heads up, though and have a couple more things to try if it isn’t working yet.

  4. wdfyfe Avatar

Thanks for dropping by https://wdfyfe.net/ You’ve got some cool things going on here. I’m totally surprised that a bunch of stuff on your 100 list would be on mine if I wasn’t so lazy. I’m too busy contemplating “old dogs and children and watermelon wine.” cheers

    1. Herb Avatar

That was one of his best, in my opinion.

I think I am a million years late but this was so funny to read! 😂😂😂 It made my night better! 😂😂
And did you redo your blog? It looks great! 😊😊

    1. Herb Avatar

Thanks! Yes I did. The “About Me” page seems to be one of the more popular. Glad you liked it.

    ALTOIDS FOR THE WIN

    1. Herb Avatar

      Yay! They are curiously strong.

  7. pendantry Avatar

    42) I have read the “Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy” at least 42 times.

Excellent! You truly are a hoopy frood, Herb!. Here’s a challenge for you 🙂

On the subject of why your ‘About Me’ page is one of the most popular on your site; my theory is it may be to do with the fact that there’s a prominent ‘About Me’ button front and centre on your blog’s home page, and another link up top that says ‘A little bit about me’ (suggesting that it may offer some information that’s different from the bland ‘About me’ information) — two bites of the cherry, as it were. And as the bulk of your content appears to be presented (currently, at least) chronologically — with 65 of the 66 pages of that each hidden behind its own click — your other content can’t compete with the ever-present ‘About Me’.

I would suggest considering the addition of alternative views of your other content. For instance, a ‘Top Posts & Pages’ widget somewhere (prominently) on your home page, or a ‘random post’ button (see my post ‘The blog-driven time machine‘ for more information on that). This might help to level up the playing field for all those worthy articles of yours that are languishing in the doldrums.

And now, I’m going to visit a random post on your site using this link here. See you later… err… earlier… err.. whatever! 🙂

O.0 This is rather a long comment. Sorry about that. I’ve also probably put too many links in it, so it’s likely to end up — quite rightly! — in your moderation queue. Here’s hoping you don’t trash it 🙂

    1. Herb Avatar

I only try to trash spam comments, but, yes, I found this comment waiting approval. I really appreciate your comments and will give them some thought. I haven’t been working very diligently on the blog, especially the “real” site. So many people I know seem to use the WordPress reader that I kind of got discouraged about using widgets and things. I appreciate it and I will start thinking about it differently. Thanks again for stopping by and for the info.

      1. pendantry Avatar

        You are very welcome, Herb!

  8. Herb Avatar

I haven’t read the last two as often because what I would do is re-read the entire series each time a new book came out. Since Eoin Colfer was asked by Douglas’ wife and daughter to write it I think the sixth one counts.

  9. mattsnyder1970 Avatar

You are quite an interesting soul Herb 😁, tonight I plan to watch a Bugs Bunny Cartoon, A little rascals short and Buck Privates followed by Abbott & Costello Meet The Killer.

    1. Herb Avatar

Thank you and thanks for stopping by. Abbott and Costello meet Frankestein is good, too.

      1. mattsnyder1970 Avatar

I own all their films bro. Every last one, I own lobby cards for some of their films, I have an autographed copy of Lou’s on first by his daughter author Chris, I love the radio show and have practically every routine memorized. My all time favorite film is Who Done it.

        1. Herb Avatar

I have a lot of their routines memorized as well. I want to read his daughter’s book. I read a different biography of the team and was always impressed by their decision to keep their act clean. “You can embarrass people into laughing but they won’t come back. We wanted people to feel like they could bring their friends to come see us.” I probably hacked that quote but it was kind of their philosophy.

          1. mattsnyder1970 Avatar

I will say though I heard three endings of Who’s on first. On TV the short shot was named I don’t care, in films he was I don’t give a darn but on radio he was I don’t give a damn.

            1. mattsnyder1970 Avatar

              Short stop

            2. Herb Avatar

That’s strange, I’ve never heard the “I don’t give a d*mn” one on any of the radio iterations I have ever heard and I have heard a few.

              1. mattsnyder1970 Avatar

It may have been from a very early show and was only uttered once, ya know. But I once had multiple shows of theirs on tape in the early 80’s.

                1. Herb Avatar

So did I. Now you can find most of them on the Internet.

Found a clip of the show I heard on YouTube proving I’m not crazy lol https://youtu.be/d1klpqG6IBw

                1. Herb Avatar

Very interesting. I noticed in the comments that several people thought it might have been made as a Command Performance broadcast which was pressed on vinyl and sent out to soldiers. First time I ever heard of this, though. Thanks! I done larnt me somethin’ today.

Just read this. Very interesting. I wholeheartedly agree on the coffee. Black and hot. In fact, it goes straight from the coffee maker to the microwave so I can heat it even more. Also, agree on Dickens. No one has ever transferred the vagaries of real life to the written page as well as Charles. Also, what’s the deal with the preposition rule? Whoever came up with it needs a good talking to.

    1. Herb Avatar

Lol! The things we put up with.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read this page.

Thank you, Herb. I’m very glad to be here. We’ll have to talk about Sherlock Holmes at some point. I, too, am a big fan.

          Sounds good.

  12. capost2k Avatar

Herb, you and I may have been twins separated at birth … and nine years and a couple states, and you are disgustingly more handsome than me.
Except I don’t play pinball or Civilization, I never skipped any grades (even though the teachers wanted me out of school ASAP),
your perfect breakfast would feed me for three days, so I am not fat,
my articles have never been rejected (nor submitted),
I have never heard of “Yoopers,”
my best buddies smell better than me (one of the criteria for being in my circle),
I’ve only read Hitchhider’s Guide four times (the sixth book was NOT written by Doug; only used some of his notes),
I have read all of Shakespeare and only a couple of Sherlock Holmes,
never heard of Hank the Cowdog,
I got bored at 39 but have nothing else to do today,
have not read Have Spacesuit Will Travel (adding to my list),
my wife buys me a new computer to annoy me just when I get comfortable with the one she bought last,
    I never taught Sunday School,
find the KJV is okay for Shakespeare fans (and I grew up on it) but loses people who understand the ESV better,
I threw all my ties away except for three that I keep for funerals or in case I win a prize and need to wear one of my two suits that I have worn twice in the past four years (two funerals, no prizes),
not a Charlie Daniels fan except for a couple of his gospel songs (his How Sweet the Sound album was pretty cool),
I don’t drink soda since a one-year Nazarite vow in 1999-2000 and gave it up,
and besides “our favorite” books of the Bible, I would add Philippians.

Now, I am trying to get the coffee stains off my computer screen.
Any advice would be appreciated since they only showed up when I came to your Home Page.
Now I tried HCl, and the screen is melting. Guess my wife will have to buy me a new computer again.

Yes, your 100 things list is the most entertaining one of those I have read. Mine was pretty boring, I think. Mostly, I included actual real authentic genuine things about me along the lines of favorite color and places I have visited.

Thank you for the great read!
