Here’s the Haps:
Today is Memorial Day. It is a time to remember those who paid the ultimate price. People have picnics and outings and things you do on a three-day weekend, and that’s fine, just so we don’t lose track of the real purpose of the day.
A bit of U.S. flag etiquette if you’re interested. If you have a flagpole where you raise and lower the flag:
Just before sunrise, raise the flag briskly, all the way up.
At sunrise, slowly lower the flag to half-staff until noon.
At noon, briskly raise it again.
If you have a stationary flag, you may attach a black “mourning ribbon” to the staff.
