Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the Blogging A – Z Challenge

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 23083 – 1108

Here’s the haps:

On to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I saw several advisements around the internet that crime is so bad here and there is a lot of violence but I think any large-ish American city has a lot of crime going on. It’s only smart to lock your car at night and secure your belongings. Be aware of your surroundings. Mrs. Herb and I are not big partakers of the nightlife with the after-dark set, anyway.

Generally speaking, the East has never really held a lot of fascination for me. We’ve visited the Statue of Liberty once but really there is not a lot of draw and there are some bad memories out that way. Not in Philly, though. And that’s not to say we won’t ever go anywhere out there. Upstate New York has some incredibly beautiful places as do the New England states. This is where I push in the clutch and shift gears, leaving the subject behind.

We have no experience with Philadelphia at all, really, other than textbooks and Youtube videos. But I do know that Pennsylvania is a beautiful state and Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States of America.

Things I want to see, in whatever order will work best to see them:

The Liberty Bell

Independence Historical Park

Museum of the American Revolution

Betsy Ross House

Take the half-hour drive to Valley Forge

The Philadelphia Zoo

Reading Terminal Market

And get a classic original Philly Cheesesteak sandwich

Of course, I really want see some Philadelphia Chickens, too, but I don’t know.

We went to the Poconos on our honeymoon and later Hershey and the amish area in Lancaster, but not Philly…yet. My dream is to camp around the U.S.

🤦‍♂️How could I forget about Hershey? Camping around the U.S. sounds like a cool idea.

What? No run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a visit to the Rocky statue?? 😉

Also, as issababycreates mentions… you may want to take time to venture out to Lancaster county – among other things, take in a show at Sight and Sound Theatre https://www.sight-sound.com/

Stop at HersheyPark to see the Chocolate Museum…

Maybe a quick run over to Gettysburg….

🤦‍♂️Gettysburgh! And Hershey’s. My knees would not like those steps very much.

David Live at The Tower Philadelphia (1974) – my only cultural reference, but not a bad one…

Lol. not a bad one. A couple of people mention Rocky running up the stairs of the art museum, too.

      That was my feeling, too.

I have been to many places in Pennsylvania but the one time I got into Philadelphia, I saw none of the sights you posted about and got so hopelessly lost that I am not even sure what I saw!

Oh, I imagine it’s like driving in Denver. I would look up guided tours before I went.

You have finally hit on a place where I have visited multiple times over the decades. My father grew up there, and not long after my last relative there died, some of my wife’s family located there. There is much to see, do, and eat.

After learning to love the Philly cheese steak with provolone as it is usually done in the midwest, I was amazed to learn that locals prefer them with Cheez Whiz.

Whatever you do, don’t fall into the tourist trap of Pats or Genos for a Cheese Steak.

Where’s the best place? In case I ever get there.
