North Dakota on the Blogging A – Z Challenge

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 23081 – 1106

Here’s the haps:

This is a state I know almost nothing about but after looking at the map I decided I wanted to do it. I could start by going to Wisconsin, maybe visiting friends and relatives, and then just doing some touristy things and heading west through Minnesota which has a lot of its own natural beauty and is called the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes. A little past Fargo is Jamestown where the world’s largest bison monument is. Really. A 26-foot tall, 60-ton concrete buffalo. He stands outside of the same town that houses the National Bison Museum, a place on our must-see list.

One plan is to start at Fargo, stop at Jamestown, then drive west across the state through the Great Plains to get to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and drive the scenic loop through the Badlands and see herds of bison and wild horses. A lot of people seem to think that prairie dog towns are a big deal and I guess they are interesting. I suppose a national park setting is appropriate to see them but they are a pest and a real problem to ranchers here in Colorado.

and then hit Montana and Wyoming on the way back to Colorado.

We stayed at an RV Park in Belfield east of Medora, went to the town sightseeing then into the TR National Park. You’re gonna enjoy it, no doubt! We were blessed seeing a few wild horses as well as a whole herd of bison! I have a photo album in my Facebook.

That’s really pretty cool! It’s always exciting when someone you know has been to a place.

One of my goals was to visit all 50 states. North Dakota was the last one. When I was 62 years old, my wife and I took a driving trip to celebrate our 40th Anniversary which included some time in Canada but the ultimate goal was to visit Teddy Roosevelt National Park and check North Dakota off the list. In my late 40’s when I had four states to go, I met a guy who was doing the same thing and he said he could tell me what one of my four was. He guessed North Dakota. It seems to be off the beaten path without as many tourist attractions as some other more popular states.

I thought fargo means somewhere faraway, but google just said that fargo means a large and densely populated urban area. Really? I’ve never encountered this word before…

I only know it as a the name of a city on or near the border of Minnnesota and North Dakota.

Honestly 26′ seems kind of short to be the tallest bison statue.

Perhaps, but how many statues of bison are there?

        That’s gotta be the kicker.

I like the idea of seeing North Dakota, but I am not sure an actual visit is in the cards.

    A few facts:
My late husband and I bought our first motorcycles in Jamestown, TN
Over 20 states have a Jamestown, and I rode through a couple of them on my widow’s ride
My current husband and I bought land in Jamestown, TN
I bought my last motorcycle in Jamestown, ND

That is interesting. It’s interesting to look up places with the same name and see they’re often nothing alike, lol.
