Blogging A – Z Challenge 2021: O Is For Onomatopoeia (Oh Brother!)

Blogging A – Z Challenge 2021: O Is For Onomatopoeia (Oh Brother!)

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 22352 – 817:

Here’s the haps:

Order of operations, octopus, orange, orangutan, onomatopoeia, outside, okay, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, origami, original, opulent, octagon, Oh bother, Ottowa, Oconomowoc, oh brother, oh boy, oy vey iz mir!

Today’s letter, if you have been on track the whole month so far (As I have. So far.) in the Blogging A – Z Challenge is O. I confess that I was just not feeling it. I even asked people, “Give me a word or phrase that starts with ‘O’” and the above paragraph is a partial list of what I got although there were a lot I couldn’t remember. Well, except for onomatopoeia. I had decided earlier that I wanted to use it but the challenge to myself was that I would use it only if I could spell it so I wrote it down on a piece of paper and then typed it in and double-checked it. Yup! I had it spelled right.

Anyway, I just wasn’t really feeling it tonight but yet I really wanted to do this challenge thing right. So, according to Merriam-Webster:

Definition of onomatopoeia

1: the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (such as buzz, hiss)also: a word formed by onomatopoeia…“onomatopoeia,” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/onomatopoeia. Accessed 4/17/2021.

So, when you see the old Batman (Adam West is the only Batman for me.) shows from the sixties where they have the effects like, “Sock,” “Wham,” “Bang,” “Pow,” etc. it is an example of onomatopoeia. Bark, Woof, clip-clop, fizz, and many others are all examples of it.

Remember, the Good Book says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”

In all the universe that O word is one of the few I can never spell – along with vehcile (that car thing on the road)

    1. Herb Avatar

That’s okay. A lot of people say aminal instead of animal.

chimley instead of chimney gets me!

Have you ever heard anyone say ambliance for ambulance?

            constantly!

Whoever coined that unspellable word missed a trick: it includes the sound ‘pee’; what it should include is the sound ‘piss’, so as to be self-referencing. That is to say, instead of ”onomatopoeia’ it should be ‘on-a-mat-I-piss-here’.

    1. Herb Avatar

That would be easier to remember.

    Quite oxymoronic, the letter “O”!

Wow, what a wonderful word — onomatopoeia. I wonder if “chop” qualify. Chop sounds like the chopping sound. LOL. I think humming is definitely one.

    1. Herb Avatar

Yes, chop and hum are both good examples.

    Nananananana Batman! Still the best.

He was so upright. One time he made Robin put a nickel in the meter. Robin said, “But nobody’s going to ticket the Batmobile.” And Batman taught him about being a good citizen and a good example.

        Love it.

Kids love this figure of speech because it’s so easy to remember. You’re doing well with your challenge.

    1. Herb Avatar

Thank you! Yes, kids do like it.

      Yes! Good! Just like that!

That’s a good AtoZ–Words no one can spell. Onomonopia (sp?) and Worchester (sp?) qualify.

    1. Herb Avatar

lol. Not only can’t spell but unpronouncable english words having English origins are extra points, I think, lol.

Darn and I thought you would say that O stood for Ohh! I guess there’s always next year. However Onomayopia is a great word. especially for Batman

Onomatopoia is one of my favourites in poems if done right

    1. Herb Avatar

      That’s a real good idea.

This is on the list words I almost never use and which require much trial and error in spelling. But you got it the first time, so Boom!

I love spelling and knowing words like this can come in handy at times.
