I’m Convinced & A “Herb Thinks I’m Special Award”

I’m Convinced & A “Herb Thinks I’m Special Award”

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 22133 – 704:

A couple of days ago when I posted about spending 100 or 1,000 hours learning to do something I received quite a few comments from a lot of different angles and I really appreciate it. I think that, in my individual case, what I am going to do is keep on writing and especially blogging simply because I like to do it. And while I agree that practice does not make perfect but practice does make better. I look at some of the recent pieces originally written in 2009 and how I rewrote them now I can see a difference. So, you folks (the real ones who actually read these posts) will have me on your hands until I offend you and you unsubscribe. I wouldn’t purposely offend anyone but in the same breath, when I write about something, some cause or purpose, I will say what I think.

But the writing is fun and I appreciate every comment I receive. My audience is above average in intelligence and taste and everything you all say is important to me. All of you lurkers are important to me too. You could de-lurkify yourself and leave me a note now and again.

All of that being said, I think the other side of the coin has merit as well. Swabby429 at Bluejay Blog made the observation, “100 hours makes a habit. 1000 hours makes an avocation.” I still plan to work on increasing my coding skills. I enjoy seeing how strings of code can make something beautiful appear on the screen. I think it’s a WordPress thing but I remember a saying that “Code is poetry.” There is something special and unique about the way that any programming or coding works but it is something I can learn with discipline and practice. I suppose writing is too but with the writing, I enjoy doing there has to be a spark of something else that might not be teachable.

Now on to the award. This is not a regular award given at a regular interval the way the Award Winning Wednesday is. I plan to just kind of give it to different ones who have done something unique or special in some way. These blogs and bloggers might not be up to the tastes of some readers but are, perhaps quirky in some way or other. Up until now the only blogs I’ve given it to are The Dumbest Blog Ever – Stupidity on [Stare]oids (see the post “A New Award“) and myself.

The blog I am giving this to doesn’t fit squarely into any one category. He sometimes writes stories where his characters meet some bad end, often being murdered but he also writes nice stories with happy endings. So, if you don’t like murder by poison or blunt force trauma or gunshot, this may not be the blog for you. He writes music and wrote music professionally and sometimes he posts samples. His poems are good but understandable (if a good poem can do that?). Sometimes he writes about himself. I think he’s a kindly gentleman but if we ever have coffee together I will do the pouring.

Tonight’s award goes to the blogger who writes a lot like O. Henry if O. Henry had known about the Dark Side and written for it, none other than Bruce Goodman at Weave A Web. Bruce, you deserve this because I think you’re special.

Herb – thank you! You deserve the wind at your back on the journey and an extra mug of coffee. I’m really grateful and excited! And I shall try to announce the wonder of it on my blog tomorrow (New Zealand time!). Thank you too for the O.Henry reference. I lived in Asheville North Carolina for a time, and so did O.Henry! So I feel some association!

Perhaps you were twins that were spearated at birth and, um, well, by age, too, I guess, well, maybe your spirit twin and one of you was the evil twin? Yes. That was a stretch.

I like that your award is not like a chain letter.

Thank you. Those really do annoy me. And they are often sent by since, nice people.

        They’re quite awkward to handle.

I think that’s why I seem to be seeing “Award-Free Blog” on more sites. If people only use to WP reader that doesn’t always help, though. I handle it by answering the questions they ask but not doing the “award” part.

I agree, I think Bruce is a kindly man, and I also don’t want him anywhere near me with a pot of hot coffee, or anything lethal!

You’re such a good man, Herb, I will never unsubscribe. You go through your days with kindness, and that’s the best way to travel. I’ll have to check out Bruce when I’m not teaching. I don’t have quite as much time on my hands these days as I did before.
