Take It From The Top – Cleaning My Desk – part the sixth

The top of my desk is large but I think I am about to the wrapping up point with this particular series. The sad part is that it means I will have to clean another section of it and the rest of the cleaning the desk is just work, I’m afraid.

This sign seems pretty self-explanatory to me. I found it, if memory serves, at the same store as the other sign but at a different time.

My youngest daughter knows that I like bears. We were going out to eat for a joint birthday celebration for Grandma Pike and me a couple of years ago at a place in a strip mall. Down the mall from it there is a hobby shop called HobbyTown which has all kinds of interesting things, whether you are a train enthusiast, into diecast miniatures just all sorts of things. She went in and got me this bear:

My wife and I love to go to the Dollar Tree and shop. Lately, we haven’t been going as much but we used to go all the time. I have gotten some really great books for a dollar and if you need a tool for one or two uses, you can pick up a good variety. earbuds, USB cables, all kinds of cool things, including toys. For a little while, in the action figures, they had some Bible characters. All of the Dollar stores seemed to have the same three, Mary, Moses, and David. Then one day as Margaret was on the other side of the store I shouted out to her, “Margaret! Hallalooyer! Margaret! Margaret! I found Jesus!” Oh, yes, I did. Well, she is the kind of person who would get that. She is also the kind of person to walk over to the register and say, “There’s a man in the toy aisle, making some sort of scene. You should call a manager to check on him.” Oh, yes. She is.

At some point I had gotten hold of little David here.

Unless you have actually read the Bible for yourself you may only know David as the guy who fought the giant. You probably know that he was a great king of Israel. He was also the youngest of his family and his job was to take care of his dad’s sheep. He took his job very seriously and when a bear tied to take a lamb, he killed the bear and got the lamb back. He did it to a lion, too. King Saul told him he was too young to fight the giant. David told about a lion and a bear that tried to steal a lamb and how he got the lamb back and killed both the bear and the lion. “Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them…” So I keep them juxtaposed on my desktop to remember, not so much whose side I’m on, but more like who’s on my side.

As I was thinking about David, there was a Sunday School song that came to mind called Only A Boy Named David. I found this video of these kids enacting the song and it was the best minute and a half of my whole day. You could tell by the one’s scraped elbow that these are all boys. I have no other information on them other than this video:

The words the way I learned them:
Only a boy named David
Only a little sling
Only a boy named David
But he could pray and sing
Only a boy named David
Only a rippling brook
Only a boy named David
And five little stones he took
And one little stone went in the sling
And the sling went ’round and ’round
One little stone went in the sling
And the sling went ’round and ’round
And ’round and ’round and ’round and ’round
And ’round and ’round and ’round
And one little stone went up in the air (woo-woo-whoop!)
And the giant came tumbling down

So King David was the David who killed Goliath? I never knew that.
Isn’t the star on Israel’s map named after him?

Yes and yes. But I don’t know why.

Thank for enlightening me. Isn’t is a symbol of Judaism?

    I LOVE that sign!
    Really neat story.
Great ole song too. I taught that one to the kids at the after school program that I worked at before covid and there was this little 4 year old boy named David. Every time we would sing his name in the song, the HUGEST smile would spread across his already adorable face. It made me happy too! 🙂

There’s nothing like a four year old’s smile anywhere!

I don’t think I’ve heard that song since, gosh, when I was in Sunday School. It comes back fast.

I love your sign, “As for me and my ranch, we will serve The Lord.” I also love Dollar Tree! Every time I go there, I’m surprised at the goodies I’m able to find for only a dollar! I feel like such a little thief! (not) And your David figurine is cute in a comical way!
